The Pixelmon mod is periodically updated to add new features and fix issues with the mod. However, if you have already installed a previous version of Pixelmon, you will not automatically be updated to the newest Pixelmon version when it is released. You will need to manually update Pixelmon to the latest version. This page is for players who have already installed Pixelmon previously. If you do not have Pixelmon installed, refer to the installation page instead.

Updating Client

The table below covers the most common launchers. Click one of the launcher links to see how to update Pixelmon on it.

Launcher Advantages Disadvantages
Minecraft Reliable, built-in Java Difficult install, no pack support (manual adding/updating of mods)
ATLauncher Reliable, built-in Java if using installer Slightly clunky interface
Technic Easy, lots of modpacks available Wipes custom mods when updating a pack
CurseForge Easy, lots of modpacks available Downloading big mods like Pixelmon may fail, large bundled install

Notes

  • This section only covers the updating of Pixelmon when it is for the same Minecraft version as the previously installed version. If you are updating to a new Minecraft version alongside a new Pixelmon version, you should follow the steps in the installation page, since you will need to reinstall Forge for the new Minecraft version.
  • If updating your Pixelmon to a new Minecraft version (example from 8.4.3. which is 1.12.2 to 9.1.5 which is 1.16.5), it is important to ensure your player data carries over if you wish to continue on an existing world. Pixelmon 9.x.x changed the location of pokemon player data for Player parties and PC Pokemon, meaning your world may be fine but your Pokemon will be missing. To correct this, you simply need to move the pokemon folder.
    • For clients: Navigate to your modpack profile's folder and go to saves/[Your world name]. You will see a pokemon folder. Copy this folder. Then in the same folder, go to the data folder. Paste the pokemon folder here, and overwrite the current one. Be aware this will replace any Pokemon you currently have after updating.
    • For servers: Navigate to your main server root folder and go to world/[Your world name]. You will see a pokemon folder. Copy this folder. Then in the same folder, go to the data folder. Paste the pokemon folder here, and overwrite the current one. Be aware this will replace any Pokemon you currently have after updating.
  • It is advised to make a backup of your Minecraft world(s) before you update. World save files can be found in the "saves" folder in the Minecraft game directory.

Server

  1. Shut down the server if it is currently running.
  2. Download the new version of Pixelmon from this page.
  3. Navigate to the server directory and find the "mods" folder where you previously installed Pixelmon.
  4. Remove the previous version of Pixelmon from the mods folder.
  5. Place the new version of Pixelmon in the mods folder.
  6. Restart the server.
  7. If the server loads without crashing, log on to the server and see if you can use Pixelmon features. If you can, Pixelmon has been updated successfully.

External JSON files

If your 1.12.2 server uses custom external JSON files, you may need to update them if a new version of Pixelmon adds or changes the files. Failure to do so will cause problems if new features rely on the newly introduced changes.

  1. Make note of all custom changes you made to the external JSON files.
  2. Delete the "pixelmon" folder and restart Minecraft to let the default external JSON files regenerate.
  3. Re-add all of your custom external JSON file changes.
