Habilidades
Las habilidades son efectos pasivos que cada Pokémon tiene para usar en combate. Un Pokémon sólo puede tener una habilidad a la vez, la cual no puede ser cambiada. La habilidad de un Pokémon se decide en el momento en que es generado, siendo escogida de un conjunto de hasta tres posibles habilidades que el Pokémon puede tener, dependiendo de su especie.
Del conjunto de posibles habilidades que un Pokémon puede tener, hay una o dos habilidades normales y, posiblemente, una habilidad oculta. Si un Pokémon tiene dos habilidades normales posibles, existe la misma probabilidad para que cualquiera de ellas sea la habilidad de ese Pokémon. Las habilidades ocultas son significativamente más raras que las habilidades normales; un Pokémon tiene, por defecto, una probabilidad de 1150 de tener su habilidad oculta. La combinación de tipos de habilidades que un Pokémon puede tener incluye:
- Una habilidad normal.
- Una habilidad normal y una habilidad oculta.
- Dos habilidades normales y una habilidad oculta.
Las habilidades, incluyendo a las ocultas, pueden ser heredadas a través de la crianza. Hay una probabilidad del 80% de que la madre Pokémon herede su habilidad; el otro 20% del tiempo, la habilidad se escogerá aleatoriamente de las habilidades normales del Pokémon (sin posibilidad de que sea una habilidad oculta). Del mismo modo,el padre tiene una probabilidad del 60% de heredar su habilidad si cría con un Ditto.
A Pokémon may change between its two normal Abilities using an Ability Capsule. However, an Ability Capsule cannot change a Pokémon's normal Ability into its hidden Ability or vice versa. In Creative mode, it is possible to toggle a Pokémon's Ability (including to and from its hidden Ability) using a Pokémon editor.

Config settings
- "hiddenAbilitySpawnRate": The chance of wild or spawned-in Pokémon having their hidden Abilities. This setting does not affect breeding.
NBT tag storage
While Abilities themselves are stored in data as NBT tags, there is also a separate tag known as the "Ability slot", which is also created upon the spawning of the Pokémon. This value is where the Pokémon's Ability derives from and controls what the Pokémon's Ability will change to upon evolution (if applicable). It is also used when determining the chances of getting each possible Ability when breeding.
Through the use of external NBT editors, it is possible to change a Pokémon's Ability. However, if the Pokémon's Ability slot is not also modified correctly, side effects will occur. For example, if a Pokémon spawns in with a normal Ability and is edited to have its hidden Ability without changing the Ability slot, it will be impossible for the Pokémon to pass down its Ability through breeding as the breeding algorithm relies on the Ability slot, which is still routed to a normal Ability in this case.
