Meltan is a Mythical Steel-type Pokémon.
It melts particles of iron and other metals found in the subsoil, so it can absorb them into its body of molten steel.
Meltan has a 1/3072 chance (by default) of spawning upon taking the smelted form of Iron, Gold, Bauxite or Silicon ores out of a furnace. Each time one of the mentioned smelted items are removed from a furnace by a player, a single attempt at spawning Meltan occurs; when multiple relevant items are taken from a furnace, the number of items taken out is the number of spawn attempts made. Modded furnaces can be used too, as long as they use the same vanilla smelting mechanic and the ingot can be pulled out manually.
Upon capture, there is a 25% chance (by default) that Meltan will become a Ditto. Both the chance of Meltan spawning and the chance of it becoming a Ditto can be edited in the config.
Meltan will evolve into Melmetal when leveled up after 400 metal ores have been smelted with the Meltan in your party.

Predictions for Obtaining
In mathematics, there is a formula for finding the actual chance of an independent event (of the same probability) happening given multiple attempts:
p = 1-(1-c)^n
given that "c" is the chance of occurrence {0<c<1} and "n" is the number of attempts made to find "p," the probability {0<p<1}. To find the amount of ores needed to obtain a specific chance of meltan spawning at least once, the formula can be solved for n,
n = log_(1-c)[1-(desired chance)]
where the term "(1-c)" is the base. The following table for chances can be constructed using the default chance of 1/3072: showing the relation between the 'chance' of at least one success and the 'amount' of ores expected to be smelted.
Chance | Amount | Chance | Amount |
---|---|---|---|
10% | 323.7 | 60% | 2814.4 |
20% | 685.4 | 70% | 3698.0 |
30% | 1095.5 | 80% | 4943.4 |
40% | 1569.0 | 90% | 7072.4 |
50% | 2129.0 | 99% | 14144.8 |
Note that given a probability less than 100%, the chance of having at least one success will never reach 100% regardless of the number of attempts made. Additionally, there are diminishing returns from attempts in terms of probability as the predicted probability approaches 100%.
