====Method 2====

#Go to the [https://dev.pixelmonmod.com/language/Pixelmon-Json/commits/master external JSON file repository] on GitLab and check if any important changes were made to the external JSON files. You can also check the update's [[changelog]] to see if external JSON files were changed.

#If there are changes to the external JSON files, look at all changes since the release date of the Pixelmon version you are using.

#Each change will list the files that were changed, including what was added and what was removed. Integrate all of these changes into your custom external JSON files.

===Pixelmon database===

If your server has modified the [[Pixelmon database]], you will need to re-add your changes into the updated Pixelmon database. If you do not do so, you will be using an outdated Pixelmon database, which may cause problems if the new Pixelmon versions relies on changes to the Pixelmon database.

#Gather all of the changes that you made to the Pixelmon database. If you change the database using SQL queries, it is highly recommended to maintain a file with all the SQL queries you have inputted into the database.

#Run the updated Pixelmon version to load the new Pixelmon database into the "database" folder.

#Edit this database to re-add all of your changes.

#Place the newly updated database into the "customdatabase" folder.

The Pixelmon mod is periodically updated to add new features and fix issues with the mod. However, if you have already installed a previous version of Pixelmon, you will not automatically be updated to the newest Pixelmon version when it is released. You will need to manually update Pixelmon to the latest version.

Notes

  • This page is for players who have already installed Pixelmon previously. If you do not have Pixelmon installed, refer to the installation page instead.
  • This page only covers the updating of Pixelmon when it is for the same Minecraft version as the previously installed version. If you are updating to a new Minecraft version alongside a new Pixelmon version, you should follow the steps in the installation page, since you will need to reinstall Forge for the new Minecraft version.
  • When an update for Pixelmon is available, it is announced in the Pixelmon Discord's "#announcements" channel.
  • It is advised to make a backup of your Minecraft world(s) before you update. World save files can be found in the "saves" folder in the Minecraft game directory.

Minecraft launcher

  1. Close Minecraft if it is currently running.
  2. Download the new version of Pixelmon from this page.
  3. Navigate to the Minecraft directory and find the "mods" folder where you previously installed Pixelmon.
  4. Remove the previous version of Pixelmon from the mods folder.
  5. Place the new version of Pixelmon in the mods folder.
  6. Open the Minecraft launcher and start Minecraft.
  7. If Minecraft loads without crashing, check the "Mods" section on the main menu. If Pixelmon is listed and displays the version number of the version you just downloaded, Pixelmon has been updated successfully.

Server

  1. Shut down the server if it is currently running.
  2. Download the new version of Pixelmon from this page.
  3. Navigate to the server directory and find the "mods" folder where you previously installed Pixelmon.
  4. Remove the previous version of Pixelmon from the mods folder.
  5. Place the new version of Pixelmon in the mods folder.
  6. Restart the server.
  7. If the server loads without crashing, log on to the server and see if you can use Pixelmon features. If you can, Pixelmon has been updated successfully.

External JSON files

If your server uses custom external JSON files, you may need to update them if a new version of Pixelmon adds or changes the files. Failure to do so will cause problems if new features rely on the newly introduced changes.

  1. Make note of all custom changes you made to the external JSON files.
  2. Delete the "pixelmon" folder and restart Minecraft to let the default external JSON files regenerate.
  3. Re-add all of your custom external JSON file changes.
