Oh god ... so i've been doing this wrong the whole time :X ..do you have like a video or a post that explains this in detail ... i'm still uncertain about stuff (like does it only count the topmost block of the block on the same level as the one the ranch is on ) and i can't find any good explanations for it .

You already saw the wiki page, which is pretty much as detailed as it needs to be and has the answers to every question you posted here. Nothing was ever mentioned about the ranch block's height, meaning that the absolute topmost block is counted regardless of the ranch block's height.
